Theodore May was born in Toronto and studied at both UTS and Saint Andrew’s College, attending the latter from 1912 until 1916 and serving in the College Cadet Corps. In April of that year he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery but was discharged in August in order to attend the Curtiss School of Aviation. He joined the Royal Naval Air Service in November 1916 and trained in France at the Royal Naval Station in Vendome. He completed his training in July 1917 and was assigned to the 10th Squadron. May was killed in action later that month, although he was listed as “missing” until October 1917. Although his attestation papers state that he was born in 1897, it is possible that he lied about his age and was, in fact, only eighteen at the time of his death. He is commemorated on the Arras Flying Services Memorial.
